About Fathers Day

I wondered of the history of Fathers Day and so I looked on the Wiki. According to the Wiki, in America, Fathers Day has been celebrated since 1910. Apparently, according to the Wiki, it is a world wide event ‘honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society’ . Here’s a story on why Fathers Day should be abolished. According to the wiki, Father Day was started by Sonora Smart Dodd. Huh? I always believed Fathers Day was started by Hallmark as a gimmick to sell greeting cards.

When the kids were young, Fathers Day was an excuse to receive a small gift. We usually spent that weekend at some vacation spot or at the lake. I would leave a voice message on my own Father’s cell phone as he also was traveling and unavailable. Now that the kids are grown up and some are fathers themselves, it becomes an obligation to pay me ‘honor’ as they have their own lives to live.

Of course, I will try to get together with my own Father, buy him a bottle of Grey Goose and hopefully take him to dinner or bring a pizza to his house. The Golden Brother is hosting a Fathers Day event at his house of which I am not going to.

One year, when I was married to my first wife, sometime in the late 1980s, I used Fathers Day as an excuse to buy a Delta Scroll Saw. It was expensive. For some reason I wanted to create magical artwork from wood and sell them to become rich and famous. At that time, an expensive scroll saw was not in the budget as there were diapers and formula and other things we needed to spend money on. But, I bought it anyways saying it was my ‘Fathers Day gift’. I still have that Delta Scroll saw. I’ve never used it.

Ugh.
