On Sunday, March 7, 2021, I walked through Section 66 of Crown Hill Cemetery.
The day was relatively warm with bright sun. I wanted to get out and do ‘something’ instead of wasting away the day laying in bed watching You Tube.
I keep a list of gravesite that I would like to visit in Crown Hill. Alice Vonnegut Adams is one graves on the list. She was sister to Kurt Vonnegut Jr., famous author who grew up in Indianapolis.
I read Vonnegut’s Time Quake and Welcome to the Monkey House. In Time Quake, he mentions his sister Alice describing her as his muse. She was older than he by five years. Tragically, she died of cancer in 1958. Vonnegut took in three of her children as his own.
Section 66 is one of the larger sections of the cemetery. It took a while to find her grave, along side her husband’s grave. He died in a tragic train crash two days before she died. Very awful.
I could not find much on Alice via Google. Indianapolis boasts of a Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library so maybe I could find more information about her there. I’m curious about her life since she was her brother’s muse.
Rest in Peace Alice Vonnegut Adams.
