If I Can’t Run … What Can I Do?

I haven’t been able to do much this rib injury. I can’t run. Absolutely can’t do that. I’m just now able to take deep breaths without a lot of pain so I’m sure that I can take a long slow walk just to keep the blood flowing. I can’t work on the house or on my porch project because those jobs require lifting and nailing and normal construction effort, which my ribs will not allow.

What I have been doing is the ‘light’ stuff that won’t bother the ribs.

I backed up all my photos and videos to a third external hard drive. I have CD backups, a time machine backup (from the Mac) and now a third backup of photos dating to 1999 when Nikki and I first got together. I thought it was time to move them to the ‘archives’ and wipe clean the Mac and maybe move on.

Doing that task involved sitting still, which my chest enjoyed. It was relatively painless.

I’ve finished two novels that I started early in the year. Laying down and reading was painless. Only when I had to get up did the pain come back. I finished Patricia Weitz’s “College Girl” and John Grisham’s “Gray Mountain.

College Girl was a coming of age story about a cute studious college senior who suffered from an impoverished home and low self-esteem but was able to study hard and make the grade to get into college. She meets a boy rich boy who hardly keeps a solid grade and deals in pot. She falls in love and he takes away her virginity. She eventually wakes up after he screws her in a cold dark cemetery where her brother is buried. He abandons her there. The story in as she realizes she’s been used and picks herself up to move on to finish out her senior year meeting a guy who cherishes her. Why are the cute girls attracted to the bad boys?

Gray Mountain is a legal thriller that sort of fizzles at the end. Samantha is an over worked young slender lawyer who is laid off in the midst of the 2008 financial meltdown. She takes a non paid internship in the backwoods of Virginia coal fields where she meets a dashing energetic lawyer who is set on taking the evil coal mining companies. By the end of the story he dies and she picks up where he left off.

I discovered that with my Adobe Creative Cloud subscription I can download all the software I use at the office to my Mac at home. Yay! Now I can work from home in the evenings and on the weekends. It’s a sit-down job coding all sorts of fancy Jquery web applications and sites. I love the work!

I can also do laundry … if I go about it slow. Since I live alone there’s no one else to do it. It doesn’t really irritate the ribs but it is really all the ‘work’ I can do.

Things are getting better. I can feel improvement every day. Although I would rather share about my run and the high it gives me. Maybe in a few weeks I can do that.



A Loss and an Injury


Ah … cool … down 5.8 pounds from last week. But since last week recorded a 2 pound gain, I’m really down 3.8 pounds from two weeks ago. Not too bad.

Thank you to everyone who has sent good vibes and well wishes for me and my recovery. You guys are the best!

I’m thankful for the loss. Although I don’t feel I earned it. The week from 8/14 to 8/21 was a horrible mess on the eating side of life. With this rib injury, I wasn’t able to do much, couldn’t go to work and it was too easy to call Papa John’s to deliver pizza and bread sticks. After I started feeling better and was able to move around on my own, I stopped the daily intake of pizza and bread sticks and went back to my modified subway diet. And getting back to work helped too because most of my waking hours are spent at the office and there’s little temptation to overeat.

And, in the last two weeks I haven’t been able to exercise at all. Nothing. Running is out of the question because the pain is too great. It’s hard to take a deep breath at times. I walk slow just to avoid any jarring or bouncing which causes ripple of intense pain. I’m looking forward to the day when I had get back on the road. But right now, exercising is out of the question.

I went to the doctor’s office yesterday to follow-up from the initial injury. I asked if there was some magic pill or steroid that could hasten the healing. She said no. She said time will heal the bruising. Maybe another 4 – 6 weeks!


Hopefully it won’t take long. I do feel some slight improvement every day. Not fast enough for my ego or pleasure but there is some improvement.

I still have 27.2 pounds to lose to reach my goal of 155. Hopefully I can keep up this trend and maybe I’ll see the goal sometime in November or December. I still have motivation to stay the course. Yay!!

What Have I Been Doing?

Nothing much.

It’s been 7 days since the ladder slipped out from under me and I fell the three feet hitting the edge of the deck causing major trauma to the left side of my back.

Thankfully, I didn’t break any ribs in the fall. But, oh my, the pain … the pain. It’s almost unbearable at times. I was laid out for four days. Two weekend days and two work days. I finally felt better to make it to work on Wednesday (8/19).

In my injury I have neglected my yard … so … last night I cut it. I push mowed it, the entire yard. On any normal day it would take about an hour to cut the yard. Last night, it took over 90 minutes. I had to stop every so often just to catch my breath. Taking a deep breath expands the injured area causing ripples of pain.

I’m really sore today. Probably should have just hired the neighbor’s kid to cut it.

I don’t think I can go running anything soon. The Immediate Care doctor said it would be 2 – 3 weeks before I could run. I believed that I could get back out in one week. At least my ego was saying that. But, last night’s yard cutting episode convinced me that the reality will probably be 2 – 3 weeks. Even though I can feel improvement in my recovery it will probably best to let the injury completely heal before I try to run. Bummer. I was doing so well in the C25K program and looking forward to running an official 5k.

So, I guess I am doing something … waiting !!


One Step Forward A Giant Leap Backward


Bummer. But not unexpected. A gain of two pounds.

Life has given me an unexpected twist. Friday evening, August 14, I was working on the porch project nailing brick mold around the new windows. The ladder slipped out from under me and I fell about three feet and hit the left side of my back on the edge of the deck. Immediate pain and shock. For a moment I couldn’t breath.

I waited until the next morning to go to the Immediate Care. The pain was massive and I could hardly breathe. I feared broken ribs and internal trauma. Thankfully, however, the x-rays showed differently. The doctor said it was a major contusion to the left side of my back.

Still, the pain was so great that I could only find comfort and breath while lying down in bed. So, that’s what I did for the next four days. I only got up to go to the bathroom and open the door when the pizza guy delivered bread sticks and meat lovers pizza.

There was no exercise. I could hardly breathe. It hurt to breath. Shallow breaths were painless but deep breaths were painful. Nothing much to do expect watch You Tube videos on van dwelling and full-time RVing.

It is unfortunate. The day before this Dark Friday I completed the C25k program and I was looking forward to the next day where I would run my first ‘official’ 5K. However, the doctor said that any running was ‘out of the question’ for the next two to three weeks. He also mentioned the x-ray showed an enlarged heart.


He said that I should check up on that.

My sister-in-law, a nurse, said that it could be just the way my heart was positioned at the moment the x-ray was exposed. She said not to panic but advised me to follow-up on it. So, the x-rays are on their way to my family doctor who most likely will send me to the cardiologist.

I did have a cardiac issue several years ago. I thought it was a heart attack but it turned out to be pleurisy, at least there was no definite diagnosis but that was the general thought. The cardiologist ordered a nuclear stress test, echo cardiograms and blood tests. I passed all the tests. There was no blockage. At that time, my heart was as normal as a 50-year-old heart could be.

Hopefully, I will recover quickly from this back injury and the heart thing is nothing to worry about. Thankfully, nothing was broken and there are no internal injuries. Only a sore back that hurts with every twist and turn of my torso. Coughing causes sharp pain. Even laughing hurts!

My plan is to weather this storm. I’m not giving up. I’m just accepting that I’ve taken a few steps backwards. Had I positioned the ladder better, been more aware of what I was doing, maybe this could have been avoided. Maybe it’s a test of my resolve.

When I can pick up the running again I will likely need to go back to Week 4 or Week 5 of the C25K program and start from there. Major bummer. I was looking forward to the Greenwood Trail Trek 5K on September 12 as my “comeback” 5K. It will probably be mid or late October before I can ‘comeback’.


Week 8 Day 3

Yay! Finished Week 8 Day 3 of the C25K program and thus finished the entire program.

The last session called 30 minutes of running without stopping. There was a 5 minute walking warm up and a 5 minute walking cool down. I was able to run the entire 30 minutes without much, if any, difficulty. I waited until later in the evening to do the run, after I finished cutting and trimming the yard. So, it was after 8:30pm when I started. By that time, the temperature had fallen a bit and the humidity was lower. It was a great run and by far the best of the program.

I started the C25K program on June 25. On that day my mileage was 1.87 and the pace was 15:39. Yesterday, on August 13, the last day of the program, my mileage was 3.47 and the pace was 11:33. Even though the total mileage was 3.47 I don’t believe that I ran a full 5K as there was 10 minutes of walking in the total mileage.

Hopefully, on Saturday morning, I will be able to run an honest 5K. My ‘comeback’ 5K will be on September 13 at the Greenwood Trail Trek 5K. If I continue running 3-4 days a week for the next 4 weeks, at least 30 minutes each time, if not more, then I’m sure my comeback will be successful.

I am developing a running bucket list of events and mileage that I would like to do. Sooner or later I will post it. But, for now, I would like to maintain my 5K fitness and eventually work up to a 10K and the mini distance. If everything aligns I would like to maintain the ability to run a 10 mile run each week.

So, it took 7 weeks to complete the program. Just a week under the normal duration. When I started I felt there was no way I could run a quarter-mile let alone 3.1 miles. Thankfully, I was able to endure even when I wanted to give up. Yay!


The Trend Continues


I’m down .9 pounds from last week. A smidgen less than a pound. At least it is a loss. I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t say I wish it was more, but at least it’s a loss. I’m doing everything I know to lose the weight but it’s not coming off as fast as I would like. My average weigh loss is 1.4 pounds per week, which is as solid as it can be, so I shouldn’t be upset or complain at all. But, in my imagination, I hoped for 2+ pounds a week.


  • I can feel the waist shrinking. Recently I was able to tighten the belt to the second notch and I can feel that maybe I will be able to tighten it to the third notch soon. I know this might be silly but it is visible confirmation that I’m doing something right, even if the scale isn’t moving down as quickly as I would like.
  • I’m 51 days on the Wagon with no beer. I know that it’s a stretch to associate my Wagon trip with my weight loss effort but there are a lot of calories that I’m passing by when I stay on the Wagon.
  • I’m almost finished with the C25K program and looking forward to the day I can run a 5k without stopping. I’ve registered for an official 5K in September. The running is getting better and easier. Could be on the 14.7 pounds that I’ve lost?
  • I have noticed a thinning in my neck and shoulders. I recently got a hair cut so maybe there’s an association there? Could be!

My total weight loss for this effort is 14.7 pounds. I guess it’s not too bad … almost 15 pounds in seven weeks. No reason to complain.

There is really nothing to change in the coming week. Although I may switch out a 6″ Subway for the bottle of Naked Boosted Green Machine Juice for my lunch. I’ve been drinking my lunch lately instead of eating solid food thinking the juice is better than a Subway. Maybe, maybe not!

My BMI is 30.0, which is on the edge of the obesity range. A BMI of 30 or greater is in the obese range. Anything below 29.9 and above 25.0 is consider overweight. I’m almost overweight and not obese. Although I’ve never really considered myself obese. I’ve always considered myself overweight. But, hopefully next week I will have numeric confirmation of my overweight-ness and not my obese-ness!

Week 8 Day 2

Wow … what a hot and humid evening. It must have been in the mid to high 80’s with 100% humidity. Hardly the best environment to run in. But, I had a need to get in a workout on Monday. Especially after the cashier at Lowes over charged me about $40 on my purchase of brick mold and casing for the porch project. Wow … was she grumpy that a mistake had been made and it was pointed out. Wow! She was grumpy.

But, the run was good, although very hard. I wanted to stop several times but pushed on to make the 28 minute run. Although I had to stop twice to tie my shoes but I didn’t count that. It was only enough time to tie the shoes and move on. My mileage for the 38 minute session (28 minute run and 10 minute walk) was 3.35 and the pace was 11:35. So, I actually cover the 5K distance. But, it doesn’t count since I didn’t run the 5k distance but mingled walking and running.

Soon, maybe this weekend, I will be able to run the total 5K distance. I will probably cross train on the Bowflex this evening and on Wednesday evening there’s a meeting that will take up the entire evening. So, Thursday evening is my next opportunity to get in an evening run. Unless I wake up early Wednesday morning to get in the run. Probably not. I could use a rest day anyways.

Starting Week 8

Yay … starting Week 8 of the C25K program.

This session called for 25 minutes of running with no walking breaks. It was one long run, especially when I added 1:45 extra at the end. So, the run was 26:45 minutes. I’m almost finished with the C25K program and looking forward to running a complete 5K, which could be a few weeks away!

My mileage was 3.07 and my pace was 11:24. So, I’m almost up to the 5K distance, but need to remember that in this session the 3.07 miles included 7:15 minutes of walking. This session wasn’t my fastest run, but maybe the humidity slowed me down. Maybe?

On the eating front … been in control for the most part. However, last Thursday night, I took the kids and their girl friends and boyfriends to Denny’s. They talked me into (or I talked myself into) ordering the “Thing”. It’s a hamburger with a fried egg, hash browns, bacon, cheese and ‘thing’ sauce. It is supposed to be a promo food item for the new Fantastic Four movie that is either coming out or is out (I wouldn’t know). It was way too much for me and I actually felt guilty for eating it. Silly, isn’t it.
